Recognition of higher education qualifications

Several forms of recognition of higher education qualifications exist in Luxembourg, each with a separate procedure and a specific purpose.

Academic recognition grants the right to use an academic title and includes the alignment of the qualification to one of the levels of the Luxembourg Qualifications Framework – cadre luxembourgeois des qualifications (CLQ). More information on this procedure can be found in the dedicated section.

Access to a regulated profession based on qualifications awarded in a country other than Luxembourg requires, for some of these professions, prior professional recognition by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

The third form of recognition in Luxembourg is the approval – homologation – of law degrees. This procedure exclusively applies to holders of law degrees awarded in a country other than Luxembourg and allows access to the complementary courses in Luxembourg law – cours complémentaires en droit luxembourgeois (CCDL).

Recognition of prior educational or professional experience (VAE) in higher education

In the field of higher education, the procedure for the recognition of prior educational or professional experience – validation des acquis de l’expérience (VAE) – is decentralised. Each institution defines its own administrative procedures that candidates for a VAE need to undergo, within the framework of the legal provisions in force.

Thus, candidates for a VAE need to turn to the institution offering the qualification they aim to achieve as part of the initial training.

Thesis of the pedagogical training period

After completion of the pedagogical training period and appointment of the public servant-trainees in post-primary education to the position of candidate in their respective careers, the thesis of the pedagogical training periodtravail de candidature - must  be prepared and successfully defended within a period of eighteen (18) months. More information on this procedure can be found in the dedicated section.
